Memory Verses

by Andrea Renee Cox

Have you ever tried memorizing Scripture?

When I was younger, I memorized a few fairly simple verses for Bible class at school (private school and homeschool). But I didn't feel like I was that great at memorizing the verses, so I gave up trying after those classes were over.

At the end of last year, one of my dearest friends asked me to participate with her in Beth Moore's Siesta Scripture Memory Team. Boy, did my nerves jangle! Could I memorize twenty-four verses in a year? Could I even memorize ten?

Before I let the fear grab hold too tightly, I stopped and prayed. If I was going to do this thing, I was going to make sure it was the path God wanted me to travel. The more I prayed about it, the more I felt drawn to participate in this memory team. So I told my friend yes.

Since August is now upon us, we are currently on our fourteenth verse. It's been going a lot better than I expected... which doesn't surprise me. God has worked like that in my life on plenty of occasions. I was hoping this would be one of them, and I haven't been disappointed. He has blessed me in numerous ways through this journey already, and I can't wait to see what He does next.

I want to leave you with the group of verses I'm working on through the remainder of 2015.

2 Corinthians 4:6-18 NIV

6. For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness,"
made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light
of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

7. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that
this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

8. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed;
perplexed, but not in despair;

9. persecuted, but not abandoned;
struck down, but not destroyed.

10. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus,
so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

11. For we who are alive are always being given over to
death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be
revealed in our mortal body.

12. So then, death is at work in us,
but life is at work in you.

13. It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken."
With that same spirit of faith we also
believe and therefore speak,

14. because we know that the one who raised the
Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with
Jesus and present us with you in his presence.

15. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is
reaching more and more people may cause
thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

16. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are
wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

17. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving
for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

18. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is
unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what
is unseen is eternal.

1 John 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
This is my all time favorite verse!! It reminds me that even when I am not feeling close to God, he is always right there loving me! My verses for the rest of the year are from Psalm 34. I am just going to stick in that chapter! I can't wait for our trip!!

Girl, I got goosebumps reading that verse! What a great one. Such power in it.

Sounds like a good plan to me, sticking in one chapter. And I can't wait either!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Loved seeing your name on here. You made me smile. :)
